Student Open Call

CORDATA GALLERY LAUNCHED THE FIRST OPEN CALL OF ART FOR STUDENTS OF WHATCOM COUNTY

December 7, 2019 – February 29, 2020

Cordata Gallery launches their first Open Call of Art inviting all students of Whatcom County, Grades 6 through 13 to submit an artwork inspired by the theme “Wishes and Dreams”. This theme is meant to inspire students to envision a future, to express their inner thoughts, and to represent a world they would like to live in.

Cordata Gallery is hosting this open call to give young artists the opportunity to exhibit in a real gallery environment.  A jury of 5 people including Argentinian art curator Ana Palacio, will select the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners and 15 other artists.  An exhibition of the chosen works will open at the Gallery on December 7, 2019 and run through February 29, 2020.

The theme of the open call ‘Wishes and Dreams’ has been interpreted in many different ways and it was not easy for the jury to nominate the three winners (Kayla Nygren (1st. Place) Emma Vandevoort (2nd place), and Jerusalem Sintayejhu (3rd place). The opening reception was very well attended by the local community, and even more surprising, led to several sales. While the main idea of this call and exhibition was to create a platform for local emerging talent without any financial objectives, it definitely represented a huge success-moment for the participating students. The Gallery is planning to launch another Open Call next year with the aim to offer opportunities to young students of Whatcom County and to reinforce the mission of the Gallery, being a place of encounter, gathering, and a catalyst for the arts.

‘Wishes and Dreams’ will be open to the public until February 27, 2020, during the regular gallery hours (Tuesday to Thursday from 12 to 5 pm, and by appointment).
